What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and refers to the compulsory act of giving a portion of one’s wealth (usually 2.5%) to the poor and needy. It is seen as a way to purify wealth and reduce inequality in society. The term “zakat” itself means “purification” or “growth,” symbolizing both spiritual and social benefits. Muslims are required to pay zakat once their wealth exceeds a certain threshold, known as the nisab.
Learn MoreWhy is Zakat Important?
Zakat plays a critical role in the economic well-being of the Muslim community. It serves as a way of redistributing wealth, ensuring that those in need receive financial support. By paying zakat, Muslims fulfill a religious obligation and contribute to social justice. It also encourages a sense of responsibility and solidarity among Muslims, reminding them of the importance of helping those less fortunate.
Learn MoreWhat Is the Nisab Value?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess for Zakat to be obligatory. If your wealth is equal to or above this threshold, you are required to pay Zakat.
Threshold Details:
Nisab is based on the market value of either:

- 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tolas)
Users can choose the standard (gold or silver) that is most relevant for their community or financial situation.

Zakat is an obligatory act of charity in Islam, one of the Five Pillars. It requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their qualifying wealth each year to help the less fortunate, purify their earnings, and foster social equality.
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is based on the value of:
Gold: 87.48 grams (approx. 7.5 tolas)
Silver: 612.36 grams (approx. 52.5 tolas)
The current Nisab value is calculated according to the market price of gold or silver. Many prefer using the silver nisab for accessibility and inclusiveness.
Zakat is obligatory for a Muslim if they meet the following conditions:
They possess wealth above the Nisab threshold.
A lunar year (Hijri) has passed since they owned the wealth.
The wealth is free from debts that reduce it below the Nisab level.
Zakat can be given to the eight categories mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60):
The poor (fuqara).
The needy (masakeen).
Those employed to collect Zakat.
Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (new Muslims or allies).
To free slaves (or captives).
Those in debt.
For the cause of Allah (e.g., charitable projects).
Travelers in need.
